Featuring 1 Tree Yoga

Jasper Wrist Mala

~ Interview with Teresa of 1 Tree Yoga ~

Can you tell us a bit about yourself and your shop?
I have been practicing yoga for over 15 years. I wanted to share the joy of yoga with others. I picked the best way I knew making yoga accessories.

What inspired you to open your shop?
My yoga teacher encouraged me to sell yoga mat bags after I had given him one as a gift.

Besides designing & creating things, what do you do?
I have two part time jobs. A child care provider and a special events decorator.

Eco Friendly Snack Bag/ trinket bag

Where, who or what does your influence come from?
Most of my influences come from my parents. They are catholic but studied Kriya yoga in their younger days.

What inspires you to be creative?
Nature inspires me to be creative, especially the beach. I also love trees. From the beautiful green summer tree to the bare grey winter tree.

How do you get out of a creative rut?
Yoga, meditation and walking in nature.

yoga mat bag

When did you first discover that you were or wanted to be an artist?
I loved to make crafts as a young child. I would give handmade gifts for birthday and Christmas gifts. When I was in my twenties I worked at an arts and crafts store. It seems like I have been doing this as far back as I can remember.

Can you describe your creative process for us?
My process is not always the same. It's hard to explain. Most of the time I can tell right away if something is going to work or not.

What is your most cherished handmade possession?
A drawing of Jesus by etsy seller x0dance0sweete0x . I gave it to my father-in-law when he was in the hospital. The print is amazing. Jesus' eyes are intense and although it is a sketch it feels real.

Feature Friday ~ Typomaid

Original Art Print "Waiting for the sun"

~ Interview with Kat of Typomaid ~

Can you tell us a bit about yourself and your shop?

My name is Katie and I have always loved art and drawing since I was young - especially at school...Back then I was pretty unsure about what to do with "art", becoming an artist wasn't really an option - at 19 years of age I was pretty clueless and couldn't think of anything I wanted to do FOREVER! Such a scary thought - but well, I guess it is not the same in the century we are living in - people change jobs, start studying with 40 years of age and change careers much faster than 20 years ago where everything seemed to be set in stone!

After a detour into German Literature, I became a graphic designer - and I have never regretted it. The possibilities are boundless.

I started my shop just one month ago. I had had the idea for a while in the back of my mind: Creating prints  that look great framed and turn a wall into an eye catcher.

I love looking around for meaningful quotes and sayings that make me laugh or think and I have collected quite a few, and I love love love typography - both go well together if enough attention to detail is put in.

I also love drawing and designing the accompanying graphics that support the message and creating one flawless art work out of multiple components. I try to make it look as if there was just this one way of doing  it...

Original Art Print "Everyone is unique"

What inspired you to open your shop?

The shop was a project waiting to happen. When I found Etsy I thought "This is amazing" and spent hours looking through all the products. I have since opened up my own online shop for my t-shirts too. When I had the idea for Typomaid it took me under 30 minutes to finish off the first design as I knew exactly what I wanted to do.

Also the idea of doing something completely self-directed was a great prospect!

As a designer you mostly design for your clients, and in my day job as Lecturer in Design in a College I get to help other budding designers. My own shop in contrast is a way to realize my own creativity and ideas.

Original Art Print "Born to shop" with purple background

Besides designing & creating things, what do you do?

I probably like to do things in a bit of an extreme way - I am a little crazy like that...at times..(My husband is nodding) And I also try to do too many things at once....

For example, I was always interested in Psychology, so I decided to study it and now I am in my last year of my Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology - it's exhausting though!!!

I am also working 2 days a week, have a super cute 4 year old daugther - that always comes first.

For fun I am getting into running at the moment and would love to do the half marathon in May, here in Sydney...

Original Art Print "Let your vision come to life" with light brown background

Where, who or what does your influence come from?

Pretty much from everywhere although I do find that European design is quite sophisticated especially design coming out of the Netherlands - I love Amsterdam!

Original Art Print "Not long now til beer o'clock" Sold without frame

What inspires you to be creative?

I think Design is a very powerful art form. It is all about communication, clarity and the visualisation of an idea.

It makes me sad when I see a beautiful fonts distorted by someone, or with
way too little tracking applied. Fonts are very sensitive, little creatures with
a soul :)

Generally I find, that design is not valued enough and people don't realize how much power good design can have.

Design is in everything - and it cannot be created by everyone! Often when I walk through Sydney
(not to mention some suburbs) I see so much bad signage, creepy color choices and ugly logos that I wonder,  how someone could have admitted this...Design can change a room, a city and even a country - it affects everyone...

Original Art Print "I used to have Super-human powers"

How do you get out of a creative rut?

I only design when I have inspiration, otherwise I do something else.

When did you first discover that you were or wanted to be an artist?
Since I can remember I was always drawing which in my case I developed into graphic design and writing.
I remember drawing butterflies in kindergarten and I was so keen getting all the shapes right while the other
kids only spent 5 minutes on those details...:)

Original Art Print "...there is no background music"

Can you describe your creative process for us?

I would read through my collected quotes and sayings or maybe search for more
and imagine how I could visualize it in the funkiest, interesting way! In a way that talks to YOU!

Original Art Print "Imagination is the beginning of creation"

What is your most cherished handmade possession?

Probably ALL cute drawings drawn by my daughter that are hanging around our house (with my prints)

Where do you see or want your shop to be this time next year?

Having more than 3 sales on etsy would be great!! ;) And also selling on markets, which I haven't
tried out yet.

Original Art Print "Another fine day, Folks"

Where would you like to be in ten years?

I would love to make a name for myself (or Typomaid) around Manly - that would be
a fantastic accomplishment. I also hope to be able to spend more time promoting my Kids Shirts
on www.latteonesugar.com - after my final exam :)!!!

Just a couple of days ago I have ordered my first promotional pieces -
business cards with my art prints on the back and little magnets as well...
Can't wait to receive them!

Original Art Print "'Procrastinators" on blue

Who are your favourite shops to browse on Etsy?

I think the Iphone covers from HavokDesigns are super cute

also TheTinyFig

and very pretty screen printing at DutchDoorPress

What is your best advice to newbie Etsian's just opening their shops?

I am probably not the right person to ask this question as I am such a newbie! I think joining treasury teams seems to be a good thing!

Original Art Print "Need coffee"

Where else other then Etsy can you be found on the net?

Like my page on
Facebook

As mentioned before I also design textiles for a Kids range - my label is called: www.latteonesugar.com

Do you have any coupon codes that you would like to share with our readers?

I haven't used coupon codes on etsy yet - BUT:

Contact  me through etsy

and the first 10 emails ( I will announce the winners at the top of my etsy shop) can purchase a print for 50% off --> $6.50 plus postage!

Wonderful Wednesday Feature

Featuring
Visit Shop
Framed Handmade Gift Paper Angel Couple White & Silver

Can you tell us about yourself and your shop?
I live in California with my husband and 3 children. We have emigrated from Poland almost 20 years ago, looking for a better life for our family, after living under communist regime for many years. I have stayed home with kids for many years, and over time- I have improved my English and even change my profession – I learned how to make computer maps and it is my full time job now.
I have opened my Etsy shop in April 2011. I make beautiful framed angels, that are unique, simple but elegant, romantic, and that can be personalized for many occasions. When a child is born –it is like an angel appearing in your life – what a better gift than an angel for a boy or a girl (in many different colors) with child’s name on the gift. When you want to thank your mom for being your angel – an angel with a “Thank you” note is a perfect gift.
When people are engaged – I suggest two angels beautifully framed for that special occasion. My angel can be an elegant gift for a housewarming party, graduation, anniversary, or just for a friend.

What inspired you to open your shop?
When my kids started collage and I had more time for my hobbies – I found out about Etsy. I was fascinated by this website. I am still amazed what a great place it is.
I have realized that this might be an excellent place for me. I was always interested in decorating, art, interior design, photography. I wanted to be part of this great Etsy community. During communism having your private business was not allowed, but I have always dreamed of having something on my own. Etsy was an excellent place for me.

Besides designing & creating things, what do you do?
I love to travel – I and my family have been in most USA states, in many European countries, we plan to travel to Asia in the next few years. When I am home - I love to read, I love good movies. I love to go to the beach - Huntington Beach is one of my favorite places – walk at sunrise, drink good wine at sunset. I like to spend time with young adults –my kids and their friends – I enjoyed their company, their spirit, interests, and discussions with them. I value time spending with good friends and good wine. I also love to cook and bake.

Framed Collage Art Dancing White Angel, Matted

Where, who or what does your influence come from?
The biggest influence to me comes from endless opportunities that USA gives to their people. Coming from the communist regime I did not even knew what freedom means. I had to retrain myself to think differently. Every day I appreciate what that country has to offer to everybody. I am slowly trying to take opportunity to express myself.

What inspires you to be creative?
My imagination! My life experience! My love for beautiful things! People around me!

How do you get out of a creative rut?
Everyday life, everyday tasks - this is what takes me away from being a creative nut. My family, friends - being with them, for them, also –cooking a good Polish dinner – gives me a break and great pleasure.

Original Collage Art, Romantic Angel Couple, Lavender Gray, Matted & Framed

When did you first discover that you were or wanted to be an artist?
As I stated on my website “I started interior decorating when I was seven years old – seriously... coming home to an empty house after school I used to entertain myself by moving furniture, books, or china from one shelf to another. For this, I got in trouble many times, but to me it always seemed like a game or a show”

Can you describe your creative process for us?
I am a night person. So in the evening, usually when I do not have to work the next day, I go to my StudioA (A –stands for Angel, and also for Anna) -which is at my beautiful home in California, in the dinning - kitchen area. I turn on some good music, I take out my acrylic papers, frames, and matts – and I look at them thinking what I would like to have. I would never create something that I personally do not like. I love black and white colors, but I like to add accent of other colors – this is why my store name is “mostly black and white”

What is your most cherished handmade possession?
My children’s art from elementary, junior high and high schools. Their pictures, collages, poems – many of them I have framed to decorate my home.

Framed Angel Art, Mixed Media Collage, Gold Black Paper, Matted

Where do you see or want your shop to be this time next year?
My dream is to have first sale on Etsy after people read this interview is on the Website, and then get busy, busy, busy with orders – hopefully to start thinking at this time next year: should I quit my day job?

Where would you like to be in ten years?
I am afraid to say it - but I would love to own my store and make a living creating all these special angels for other people. To be present in other homes with my art would be the greatest joy.

Who are your favorite shops to browse on Betsy?
My favorite shops on Etsy are those with photography. I myself love to take photos everywhere….

Framed Original Art, Blue and White Paper Angel, Matted

What is your best advice to newbie Etsian’s just opening their shops?
I would say – be patient, take your time, learn about Etsy, watch videos, read successful stories and be involved in Etsy Teams.

Where else other than Etsy can you be found on the net?
I have my website (created by my son):

and also I invite you to my studioA on Fickr:

Do you have any coupon codes that you would like to share with our readers?
Yes and no……. I do not have any coupons, but I will send a matching angel card with every order made from now until Valentine’s Day.
