Feature Friday

Congratulations to Cortney for winning last weeks Treasury Challenge with her gorgeous Treasury Fantasizing A Blue World!  I really enjoyed  being able to speak with Cortney a little bit about her art, her shop and inspirations.  This is what she had to say...
Dream Me Bath Set- For Dream Divination and Restful Sleep.

~ My Interview with Cortney ~

Can you tell us a bit about yourself and your shop?

I'm 34 years old. I'm a mother, a veteran, a reservist (in the Air Force), I'm currently going to school full time to get my Bachelor's and I work full time as a Sponsorship Coordinator at Kirtland AFB in Albuquerque, NM. My Husband is Active Duty and we have lived here for 3 years.

My shop is filled with organic and natural products for the bath, mostly. I make soap, bath salts, oils, and candles.

Cleanse Me - A cleansing soap in preparation of spell work

What inspired you to open your shop

My shop is inspired by my faith. I'd consider myself a green witch. I have been on this path for 16 years. I started making candles 10 years ago. When we got stationed overseas, I stopped making everything. When we got stationed at Kirtland, I began dabbling in soap. I love to garden and create organic and natural products. I felt that the bathroom is our most sacred area....when it comes to bathing (grin). We bathe to relax, think, release tension. I started thinking about all the things I worry about when I'm taking a shower or bath and started to design products around those worries.

Besides designing & creating things, what do you do

My main job is a Sponsorship Coordinator at Kirtland AFB. My sole purpose is to seek out companies to sponsor events that enhance the morale, welfare and recreation of the Active Duty and Civilian community on the base. Most of our events are considered "Non-Appropriated Funds" which means they are not funded by Congress. We are a self-sustaining squadron and we have facilities that generate money. But, due to costs of maintaining those facilities, some events cannot be paid for and so it is my job to get funding. With Sponsorship comes benefits like advertising, logo placement and even representatives to attend the event to talk to the troops. It can be very stressful at times but...it's completely satisfying to see our families have a good time.

Where, who or what does your influence come from?

My influence comes from my faith but also...everyday issues,, problems and stressers. I create "spell" kits. Though the word 'spell' might deter some, it simply means I have given you tools to aid in a prayer of hope. Plants, herbs and essential oils have specific purposes. I feel that God....or Godess (smile) have given us these tools to use. So I have added them to my products to help in that prayer or spell that you might be thinking of when bathing.

Pumpkin Soap - Pumpkin Jack - A Soap delicious enough to eat

What inspires you to be creative?

Inspiration comes from everyday interactions with people. I tend to attract people who need to get something off their chest. You could call me a psychiatrist who doesn't get paid! But, they inspire me to create products that help them and others.

How do you get out of a creative rut?

Sigh, well....sometimes that's a toughy. I created a product just for this purpose, "Writer's Block". But sometimes even I get so stuck, I forget I've given myself this tool! Rosemary can help awaken the thought process. When it dawns on me that I have just the tool, I use my own product. I love to write also, so when the creative rut is deep...I start to write which then spurs more creative thought.

Dream Me Soap- Calm your energy and prepare for a dreamy night's sleep

When did you first discover that you were or wanted to be an artist?

Since the day I was born? HA! When I was 5, my mother took me to Ballet class. This was and will always be my first love. I danced for many years until economic struggles made it too hard to go and I had to quit. I always wonder where I might be today if I had been able to continue on that path but...everything happens for a reason. I began to draw and write and still do to this day. I think making the products that I do is just another creative outlook that I love.

Can you describe your creative process for us?

I go with my gut, intuition.... For awhile, it was getting difficult to handle my schedule, with school, work, and leaving town each month for reserve duty. That's when I created "Unwind" bath salts. I know I'm not the only one who has stress. This is how I create. I go with the knowledge I have on herbs and essential oils but I also do research and make sure I'm blending the right herbs and oils together to get the best result. Then I create!

Sweet Money Bath Salt- 100% Dead Sea Salt- For prosperity and the attraction of money.

What is your most cherished handmade possession?

Does my son count? My son is special needs and he inspires me not to create but that with all the trials and tribulations, we all have a purpose and we are all special. He inspires patience and creativity as he loves to draw...cars mostly :). He creates things from the strangest objects. He amazes me everyday and I think, how can this young boy do such amazing things? He's definitely my most cherished handmade possession. He is a part of me and the love I have for him is the energy I put forth in the products I create.

Where do you see or want your shop to be this time next year?

That's an interesting question as this next year will be very interesting. In February, I'm taking a hiatus as I will be leaving my family for 5 months to train in Texas. I have made the decision, upon returning, that my shop will become my full time job. So I hope by next year, I will have more products and will have tweaked my craft to be more efficient and successful.

The Elements Soap & Oil Set - Organic Soap and Essential Oil to help balance you with Nature Earth, Water, Fire, Air

Where would you like to be in ten years?

In ten years my husband will be close to retiring. I hope, after all the travel we have done that we find a wonderful place to live in this great country and...I hope to have a real storefront.

Who are your favourite shops to browse on Etsy?

Oh...there are so many to choose from!!!

-This is one of my newest favorites and the owner is amazing!

-Another amazing shop. I have many items in my son's room from her.

-This is a shill...as these are my parents...but no kidding, as mad as my mother gets when I do this, I've bought over 12 coasters from them. One of many loves is music and I just can't help myself. I have them all over the house!

-Your stuff is absolutely amazing. The dolls...the DOLLS! You are so on my Christmas list...for me! As I'm going to be selfish and buy a present for myself!.

-I could go crazy int his shop!

What is your best advice to newbie Etsian's just opening their shops?

My best advice...Take good pictures! It's all about what we see, not what it is. I've learned this the hard way but a good lesson nonetheless. I don't read first, I look first...so take great pictures!

Sweet Money Candle- For prosperity and the attraction of money.

Where else other then Etsy can you be found on the net?

I also have an artfire account. And by next year, hope to have my own website also. www.artfire.com/ext/shop/studio/sunmune
I'm still learning how to use this site! But it seems great.

Do you have any coupon codes that you would like to share with our readers?

Right now I have a special going on thru Black Friday. Buy any two items, get any soap free. They just need to write which soap they would like in the notes of the transaction.

Feature Friday ~ Havok Designs

Having previously won the Treasury Challenge myself, I wanted to pay it forward and give the blog feature to another deserving team member.  I am excited to share with you a great interview I had with one of our newer team members, Kristen from Havok Designs!

Bold & Modern Red Wool Felt iPhone / iPod Touch Cozy with Earphone or USB Cable Back Pocket - Double Buttoned

~ My Interview with Kristen ~

Can you tell us a bit about yourself and your shop?

I am 27, have been married for three years, and I just graduated last December with my A.A. in Art. I plan on continuing my education with a B.A. followed by a Masters degree allowing myself to work with museums or open up my own art gallery someday.

Our shop provides a mixture of objects for your life utilizing wood, sewing and art. We want to make your lives more fun and efficient and allow you to choose items that match your individual style. We love doing custom and OOAK pieces!

What inspired you to open your shop?

My shop started with my husband and I being unhappy at our jobs, working for other people receiving very little appreciation and respect in return. We are both intelligent and creative, though in different ways. Our idea was to take the talents and passions we both possess and to bring them together forming one unique creative outlet. We create and design a mixture of goods for your life. I am the artist and sewer, and he is the wood worker and the fabricator.

Besides designing & creating things, what do you do?

We recently had the amazing opportunity to live in one of the most beautiful places in all of the United States, the south west region of Montana amongst the Rocky Mountains, the Bitterroot National Forest, just north west of the Continental Divide. We don't have all the conveniences of the city, but we have all the natural beauty one could ask for! So we spend a lot of time outdoors on trails, sight-seeing, taking photographs, fishing, and just being. We came from south Florida where you are constantly bombarded with something. Whether it be people, advertising, or superficiality, having a silent moment to yourself does not exist. Though we know it's only temporary, we are taking advantage of the opportunity to live peaceful lives.

Grey Wool Felt iPhone Case / iPod Touch Case with Earphone Pocket - Lime Green Accents & Wood Button

Where, who or what does your influence come from?

Most of my artwork has been influenced by life, nature and other people, especially my parents. My dad was a professional musician and writer, and my mom was a writer and supporter of all things creative. They encouraged me to create art, write, color outside the lines, and to just be me and do what makes me happy. My dad died when I was 16 and my mother passed about two and a half years ago. My artwork tends to show my feelings and emotions that have gone along with those events. I use it as a cathartic release and often produce some impressive and beautiful work.
As far as my sewn goods, I am influenced by daily living, efficiency and individuality. I like being that person who has something no one around her has, and I want my customers to have that same pride of being themselves, and I love having items that just make your life better! I enjoy the handmade, homey feeling of it all, too. My mom was a wonderful sewer and growing up she made all of our costumes, dresses and such. Adding personal touches makes it feel more real, as if it were created specifically for you.

What inspires you to be creative?

Talking with other creative people and seeing the work they produce drives me forward. Life has taken me on several twists and turns, ups and downs, and I try to integrate those feelings and emotions into my artwork. But I really do love looking at others' works! I also love seeing the process of things from start to finish. I love watching reality shows such as, "Work of Art: The Next Great Artist" or "Top Chef" and seeing the creativity and different avenues people take utilizing the same materials.

How do you get out of a creative rut?

This is going to sound kinda dorky, but I dance, jump on the bed, or blow bubbles :) I feel anything that reminds you of the innocent wonder of being a kid is a good thing! It'll always make me feel better, but if I'm still feeling uncreative I'll go online or pick up a book or magazine and look at works by my favorite artists.

Gold, Copper & Silver Industrial Gears Mixed Metal Chandelier Earrings - Women's Gift

When did you first discover that you were or wanted to be an artist?

It's funny because in some way shape or form I have always been involved in art, but not until the past couple of years when others starting calling me an artist did I realize that's what I was meant to be! I was always confused about what I wanted to major in or what to go to school for until I had art and graphic design classes as my electives. After seeing how naturally well I did and how much I enjoyed it all, I realized that art can be my career and my life as opposed to just my hobby or just "that thing I do."

Can you describe your creative process for us?

I'll have an inspiration and idea and I'll either sketch it out or just jump right into it! I continually work at it, altering, removing, adding, revisiting until I am satisfied with where it is going. I'll sit and stare for a long time at it, hours it feels, and analyze it in every way shape and form possible. I usually just keep working until it's done. I'm a little nutty about that...

Industrial Gears Mixed Metal Necklace - Gold Copper Silver - Women's Gifts

What is your most cherished handmade possession?

A couple years ago in my 3-D Design studio class, our first project was to create a wooden sculpture using only found objects a la Louise Nevelson. I used wooden parts from a doll house kit my dad had purchased when I was young but never completed, old wooden family picture frames, other objects from my childhood, and wooden objects I found outside the home. My husband helped me build a wooden frame and from there I put all the objects together how I thought they looked best and spoke to me most. I finished it up with a few coats of a medium dark grey spray paint. I wanted it to elude a somber, reflective tone. It came out extremely beautiful and I have received much praise over it. It was my first experience with sculpture and artistic cathartic release, and ever since I've kind of been addicted to that feeling and experience.

Where do you see or want your shop to be this time next year?

My goal is to make it to the front page of Etsy within my first year. I would really like our Blog, Facebook and Twitter pages to be popular. Hopefully by then we would have had loads of sales and positive feedback! I want myself and the business to continue to learn and grow. We opened this past August so as far as businesses go, we are still an infant. I have seen a lot of progress so far already, and I just hope it keeps going!

Where would you like to be in ten years?

I would love for this business to be completely successful, enough so that I would have gone back to school and received my masters. With that under my belt, I will have my own art gallery and would have had my artwork seen all around the country in shows and other galleries.

Vintage Viewfinder & School Portrait Green Corduroy - Grey Linen Zip Pouch Set - Made To Order

Who are your favourite shops to browse on Etsy?

Haven Vintage is a wonderful shop! Nervous system is a great shop for unique and beautiful jewelry. Natalie + Alanna is an amazing shop with two independent fashion designers with beautiful stylish hand made clothing! I can't get enough of David Rasmussen's furniture! There are so many incredible shops on Etsy, and I am continuously finding more and more I love!

What is your best advice to newbie Etsian's just opening their shops?

Two concepts I am still trying to wrap my finger around, and they are Patience and Photography! It takes time to see results and you need that patience to keep your nose to the ground, so to speak. Keep working to get your name out there. Photographs will make or break your store! If you have amazing photos that'll pretty much sell your product for you. Learn to love your camera and your photo editing software :)

Featured Etsian Artist Metal Freak

JellyMuffin.com - The place for profile layouts, flash generators, glitter graphics, backgrounds and codes

I would like to start with a BIG CONGRATULATIONS to Cherrytime for winning last weeks Treasury Challenge!  Since they have been featured here before as this was not their first time winning, they so generously offered to pay if forward to fellow Etsian Artist Metalfreak!  I had an opportunity to speak with Jennifer of Metalfreak about her shop, her art and how it all came to be, so keep reading below...

starlite earrings

~ My Interview with Jennifer ~

Can you tell us a bit about yourself and your shop?

My name is Jennifer James. I create wearable funky little pieces of art. Each piece is designed and produced individually, by me, by hand, using an unusual combination of natural gemstones and fossils, and metals. I try to balance playfulness and natural form by translating textures, colors, and patterns of the natural world into functional designs. I love design challenges and creating custom orders.

What inspired you to open your shop?

Friends from others states asked where they could view and purchase my jewelry. I finally decided I had enough inventory to open myself up to a new part of the world and joined Etsy as a seller.

Besides designing and creating, what else do you do?

I study! I love to learn everything I can about all the gemstones and minerals and fossils in the world. The funkier the texture, the more I am drawn to them! I go to gem and mineral shows and even hunt down a few stones in wild myself.

fidgeter's delight

Where, who, or what does your influence come from?

I love the work of Tim Burton. I love surprises. I want my work to look like it should get up and crawl across your neck. I have an inordinate fondness for insects and find their gorgeous, highly mechanized bodies the epitome of form and function working together. Fianlly, I love Dr. Seuss and the idea nothing is impossible, so I like to pair the unsuspecting, such as a high quality diamond with a found riverstone.

What inspires you to be creative?

What doesn't? I see something beatuiful in everything, even the rusty streak left by nail decades ago. It seems everything I see on a daily basis is somehow translated into a design element. I collect little slices of my day in the form of seed pods and rocks. I keep a small notebook in my handbag and am always sketcing a texture I like or a pattern from a skirt walking by. Everything is so fun to look at and think, "How can I use that?".

ninja insect pendant

How do you get out of a creative rut?

I usually delve into the natural world. If I can re-establish my connection with Nature, I find a creative energy to design new things. Sometimes, I just turn an everyday object upside down or hold it up and look at it from below. A new shape, or a new perspective on an old shape, opens a new field of deisgn opportunity.

When did you first discover that you were or wanted to be an artist?

Oh, as a child! I was quite rambunctious and spent a lot of time outdoors. I spent days making forts, mud sculptures, and jewelry woven from willow reeds and grassy vines. I had a bucket of crayons and found I could melt them and paint with them. Now as an adult, I asked what my love in life is and the answer is METAL. So here I am, embarking on my next career as a metalsmith!

Can you describe your creative process for us?

A natural scientist, I see the world through a microscope. I want to know how things are put together and how they work. I ask why. A lot. I take things aparts, open them, play with the seeds inside, frankenstein pods from different species. Usually, I get inspiration from a funky natural shape and want to fabricate that shape in metal, by hand. This leads to problem-solving and experimenting with different techniques (probably my most favorite part). Then, once I find a solution, I go about tweaking the design by adding color or stones. Sometimes it starts with stone. The beauty of the pattern on a piece of jasper can tell me what it wants to be and what the metal needs to do to enhance it. And, of course, there is always a spontaneous element added. Whether a piece of gold lying next to the piece gets added because it makes the stone's color pop, or a mishap on the solderig brick makes a decision to add some silver balls.

What is your most cherished handmade possession?

My Grandfather made a child-sized cabinet for my Mother when she was little. It later was used by brother as a child, then me. I still have it and love the stories each scratch on it can tell.

Where do you see or want your shop to be this time next year?

I would love to have more custom orders and a 100 sales!

Where would you like to be in ten years?

I would like to continue showing at galleries and festivals. I also hope to have a brick and mortar gallery with my studio in the back. I want to have a place where emerging artists can be comfortable exposing their work for the first time. I also want it to a be a place established artists can gather and share experiences and bounce ideas off one another. Hmm, sounds more like a coffeehouse with my studio in the back.
